ILLINOIS HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATION PILOT EVENT AT STATE DRAMA
Short Film
The general purpose of the Short Film program at the IHSA State Drama Finals is to encourage participation, support filmmaking education, and recognize student achievement in film as they showcase their talents. Short film is both an art form and communication tool that encourages creativity in visual storytelling, and sharpens students’ knowledge of conceptualizing, researching, writing, casting, directing, acting, producing, and editing.
Guidelines outlined below are designed to introduce this pilot program.
Entry Information
Entries - 1 per School
Time Limit - 5 minutes from opening title screen to final credits
Genre - Comedy, Drama, animation, Documentary, Experimental
Process - Student(s) will bring their own media formatted presentation to the Drama State Final site for a screening debut. The State Final site will provide a computer connected to an LCD projector and screen. Internet will be available. Students can access the internet to screen their Short Film or they can bring their final production on a jump drive.
Judges and members of the cast/crew present will view the Short Film together. Seating for audience member will also be made available during the screening.
Standards - All IHSA Drama Rules will apply for material appropriateness. Judging will be based on creativity, effective storyline, technical aspects, acting, artistic merit, and overall presentation.

Express you interest to have your 5-minute Short Film debuted at a screening during the IHSA Drama State Final on Saturday, March 28th at Oak Lawn Community High School by contacting sknoblauch@ihsa.org.
Create
The writer, director, cast, cinematographer, editor, musicians, sound and lighting must be bona fide students at the member schools and must meet all IHSA eligibility requirements of this current school year.
Evaluate
Short Films will receive ratings, written and oral critique. Judges will be filmmakers, film educators, critic and film enthusiasts.
Short Film Festival
Students will receive ratings in this festival format. The best of day will also be recognized at the conclusion of the screenings.
